Retail News and Notes

• As we head into the first full week of June, our annual Golf Classic is now just days away.

• The CRMA Golf Classic is a critical source of revenue for the Association and we hope all members and friends of CRMA will consider helping us in some way this year.

• Here are the basics:

Where: Blackledge Country Club, Hebron, CT

When: June 13, 2006 – 10:00 am shotgun start

Cost: There are different levels of support that are available to participants. You can visit our website for all the details.

• If you are interested in golfing you can put together a foursome or twosome or we can put you with a group.

• If you can’t golf you can still be a great help to us by being a tee sponsor, hole sponsor or by donating a raffle prize.

• We hope members will consider helping us this year. In today’s economy it is critical that Associations like ours try different ways to raise funds to keep the Association strong.

• Thank you for your consideration and support.

Washington Update-Obesity Law

• Although CRMA is a state wide Association that concerns itself with state issues, we do from time to time get involved with issues that are being considered by Congress.

• Recently we lobbied US Senator (future President?) Dodd, along with many of our QSR members, to urge him to co-sponsor the Common Sense Consumption Act, S.908.

• The Act would prohibit frivolous law suites against the restaurant and food product industry for claims about obesity.

• The US House of Representatives has passed its version of the bill in an overwhelming bipartisan manner.

• These lawsuits are without merit and will force companies to incur exorbitant costs, which will have a negative impact on their ability to expand their business and create jobs in CT.

• Lawsuits like these do nothing to deal with the complex issues surrounding obesity.

• We urge all members to call Sen. Dodd’s CT office and ask him to co-sponsor this important bill. Dodd’s office number is 860-258-6940.

Member Services Update

• From time to time we talk about the great member service offerings we have for members, especially our bank card program with Global Payments.

• This week we are very pleased to inform you that CRMA and Global Payments have gotten together to revise our pricing for this program to make it even more attractive.

• Our rates are now better and more competitive than any processor in the market. We have more flexibility in pricing while continuing with NO HIDDEN FEES!

• If you are interested in learning more about our Bank Card program with Global Payments, call Cathy in our office TODAY!

• Cathy can be reached at 860-527-1044 or via email at cathy@crmaonline.com.

Retail News and Notes

• Trends: Belts make a fashion statement, belts have become the "No. 1 accessory" for women, being used to cinch the waist, hug the hips and enhance the bust. In men's fashion, shirts have become all about the thread count, with some hitting 200-count.
USA TODAY (6/1)

• May retail sales surpass expectations, shoppers weren't slowed down by higher gas prices as same-store retail sales for May increased 4.1% -- more than the 3.2% predicted -- according to a report by an industry group. Chains including Target Corp. and J.C. Penney Co. posted strong results, but Wal-Mart Stores' sales were below predictions, hurt by $3-a-gallon gas, which is expected to contribute to slower sales in the second half of the year. T

• CVS closes $2.93B deal, looks for more acquisitions, as CVS Corp. closes its $2.93 billion acquisition of 700 Osco and Sav-On pharmacies, CEO Tom Ryan said the company is still looking for other purchases but did not specify any particulars. Additionally, CVS plans to open 250 to 275 more stores on its own, and Ryan dismissed the downgrades by credit-rating companies for the amount of debt incurred by the new purchase.
